The Southern Main Line – running between Lund and Arlöv – has been upgraded from two to four tracks. The capacity on the line has increased and the rail traffic is less sensitive to disturbance.

Parts of the route were built below ground level to reduce noise disturbances from rail traffic. More and better crossings have been built over the tracks to reduce the barrier effect of the railway in the communities.

Construction started in October 2017. Four tracks on the route and four new stations were inaugurated in 2023.

During 2024, work areas in the villages of Hjärup and Åkarp will be restored.

The new railway

In order to reduce the noise disturbances from the railway traffic, approximately 5 kilometers of the tracks has been lowered, 6 meters through Åkarp and 4 meters through Hjärup. Through Arlöv and on the stretch from Hjärup to Lund, the tracks run at surface level.

In Arlöv, Burlöv Station has been upgraded to a commuter station, which means that both "Pågatåg" (commuter trains) and Öresundstågen (trains that cross the Öresund) will stop at the station in the future. The stations at Åkarp and Hjärup has been upgraded and a brand new station has been built at Klostergården. During the project, three bridges for the motorway in the Alnarp intersection has been reconstructed.

Temporary tracks during the construction period

It was a requirement that rail traffic on the southern main line should not be affected during the construction period.

In order to build the four new tracks at a lower level, in the same position as the old tracks, the rail traffic was rerouted. Two temporary tracks were built next to the existing tracks through Åkarp and Hjärup. On other parts of the route, two new tracks were built alongside the existing tracks. When the new tracks were completed, the old tracks was upgraded.

Extension in stages

The track between Malmö Central and Lommavägen in Arlöv has already been upgraded to four tracks. The part that is now being built is the extension from Arlöv to Ringvägen, south of Lund's central station. The work is carried out in two parts, on the one hand the 8 kilometer stretch between Flackarp and Arlöv, and on the other hand the 3 kilometers from Flackarp to Lund.

The Southern Main Line is one of Sweden’s most important railway lines for both international and national transportation. The Southern Main Line is part of the Trans European Network (TEN), which is the European network for cross-border high-speed rail transportation.
